GlamByGilly, also known as Gurleen Gill, is a rising freelance HMUA based in Brampton, Ontario. Gurleen has over 19,000 followers on Instagram and continues to grow her following every week. She has a diversified fan base that show an endless amount of love and support which motivates her to do even better. Gurleen’s fans and vendors have her back whenever she needs it. One thing I can tell you is that once people start hating, you know you are doing great. And Gurleen, you are killing it!

Nine months ago, Gurleen had started with just 300 followers which were mainly her family and friends. She had very few interactions and likes. She has been truly committed to her work and has collaborated with multiple vendors and showcased products in a creative manner. Her content has generated a lot of exciting buzz and this has attracted more individuals and vendors to her page. She now has 19,800 followers. Talk about starting from the bottom! I updated this figure multiple times this week and it is great to see that Gurleen is becoming so popular in the makeup world.

I am so fortunate to have met Gurleen and have even got my make up done by her. I promise you, I am not being biased but she is very talented. It is so amazing to know that she is a self taught artist. My experience with Gurleen was really fun and exciting. I had booked her for a family function and I had no idea what I wanted. She sat me down and we talked about what I was wearing so we could work around that colour scheme. I informed her about the skin issues I have around my eyes and how I am self conscious of my dark circles. She ensured that the products that were being used were safe for my skin and also comforted me through telling her own experiences. Gurleen boosted my confidence before the event and made me feel comfortable in my own skin. She is a genuine, kind hearted individual who loves to engage in conversations. She also helped me decide whether to wear a dupatta or a shawl and assisted in pinning it to my suit.

As you can tell, I am a big fan of GlamByGilly and she is a great role model for youngsters and aspiring makeup artists. I got the chance to talk to Gurleen about her background and her inspiration for doing makeup.

An Interview with GlamByGilly

What is your name?

My name is Gurleen Gill.

How old are you?

I am 24 years old.

What is your educational background?

I completed my 4 years in BSc honours psychology with a minor in biology. Well, coming from a Punjabi household, my parents certainly pushed the typical road to education and in particular sciences. My parents still hope I pursue my masters and go to med school as a few of my family and friends have done so.

Were you ever confused on what you really wanted to do?

Yes, I was. I was always stuck between work and pursuing my actual passion. I considered doing my MBA (mainly to keep my parents happy and quiet for a while) and started working at TD Canada Trust which was an amazing but challenging journey. I was working full time hours and I barely had the time to reply back to emails and create new looks. I then decided it was best to leave TD Canada and pursue what I really wanted to do. I began to make tutorials and recreate some cool looks to share with everyone.

How did you start doing makeup?

I started learning and practicing makeup on myself and my friends in undergrad, watching various videos and tutorials. They encouraged me to open up an Instagram page in 2016 where I posted some of my looks as well as my clients looks.

How is the industry right now?

In the industry now, people are not as interested in clients looks. This also limited my Instagram growth in the beginning because I was posting various client looks. When I started creating tutorials, that was when I began to see a lot of growth.

What is the best part of doing makeup?

I LOVE meeting new people and having the opportunity to work with such amazing women. Every week, I meet such inspiring and strong women. Their stories have allowed me to change my perspectives on many topics. I love having a platform that I can encourage individuals and be able to talk to them. I also love being able to share my work and connect with individuals around the world. I have gained a very strong and amazing support system who have backed me up no matter what issue arises.

How does it help you?

It is very therapeutic because we do not know each other so well but are able to share sorrows, accomplishments and just talk about life. It has opened up my eyes to so much more. Being a woman in the GTA, I feel like we don’t really put ourselves out there and just stick to our small circle of friends. Meeting my clients allows me to break through that barrier.

Are there any negative aspects?

I recently have dealt with random cyberbullying which is very unfortunate. It is hard to overcome situations like that but if you have a strong support system, like I do, it really changes everything.

What would you like to do to help women entering this type of industry?

I always want to encourage women to keep focused and be driven. I want them to share their talent and work without being afraid of backlash and negativity. It is important to get yourself out there and do what you truly love. I tend to share people’s pages and pictures so that everyone is able to see such great talent out there.

Any last words?

I am very thankful for other artists, vendors and my followers who have supported me and my art over the last nine months. I hope you continue to support me and show me love. It is also amazing to see that people are encouraging arts and how people’s mindset has changed over the years.

What I love about Gurleen is that she is all about girl power and supporting people whether she knows them or not. She takes the time out to understand you and tries to help as much as she can.
